Summer Camp 2024
Ashigara

This summer we had our second summer camp since the Covid pandemic.  For many of the younger students it was their first time away from their parents.  To the teachers’ surprise, the children were completely fine through the first night.  As we found out after our camp, some parents’ anxiety level and nervousness was far more than their children. 

As our buses left, parents were seen in tears as they waved goodbye. For their children in the bus, they were ready to go and have fun away from their parents.  During our two hour bus ride. I’m certain that it has been a while or their first time without an electric device and they had to entertain themselves with gesture games, しりとりゲーム(taking the end), and in our bus we were played riddles.  Which they were able to complete and they wanted more!  

As we arrived at camp, I was able to interview a few of our new and second time campers. Out of the five one said, “ I’m tired” , three others said, “ I`m happy because my Mom & Dad are not here” , the other said, “ It is nice because my Mom can’t get angry at me!”  

After our arrival, we had an introduction from camp staff.  Then we were off , to introduce our students with new experiences that they didn’t know they were capable of doing and hopefully they will share with their parents. I and other staff  are always amazed  at how the children have grown physically and mentally through our short time together. 

Our teachers are very proud of all that the students have accomplished!  It is always very sad for me to say goodbye after our time together. We have shared cooking, catching fish, riddles in bus, swimming, hiking, bedtime stories, breakfast, lunches, and everything else together.
