Summer School Week 1 (07/22 – 07/26) Week Summary

What a way to start our Summer School 2024 program! We jumped right into our
summer of adventure with a week all about Jungles and Forests.

We are lucky, in our area, to have access to some beautiful, clean rivers and shady
forests to give us some hands-on learning experiences. In these hot summer months,
it can be hard to play outside, but we beat the heat by playing and learning in our
local river.

There were so many things to discover! We had a great time catching fish, crabs,
water snails, crayfish, and even frogs! All around us we could hear the singing of
birds, and we refreshed ourselves in the cool greenery.

…and of course, we had fun with our water guns too.

While we took care to safely return all the animals we found to their native habitats
before heading home, we did each select a smooth stone from the river bank for a
souvenir. The next day we painted these as mementos of our trip to the river and the
fun we had.

All classes learned about jungles and forests, and for us in Class E (the most
advanced class this week) we took a cultural approach and read folktales originating
in South America (Brazil and Bolivia to be exact), the home of the Amazon
Rainforest. We also learned about the geography of South America and where to find
the countries that created the stories we read. We explored questions like, “Why is the
Amazon Rainforest so hot?” (Answer: because it lies close to the equator).

In between studying, we still found plenty of time for summer fun. The water play
outside in our own Cosmos Garden was a big hit — we invented a fun game, using
our water guns to shoot down bubbles.

It was a great week, full of true adventure in our own local rivers and mountains. Not
only did we learn about the world at large, we learned how precious the natural world
all around us is, how it keeps us happy and cool, and how we should respect and
treasure it.

Thank you to all students for making Summer School I a fun-filled adventure, and we
are all looking forward to next week when we explore…SPACE!
